Garbage Disposal Repair in Austin and Central Texas

hy Homeowners Trust Lantz Home Services

Lantz Home Services has served the Highland Lakes and Hill Country for more than 50 years as a family-owned plumbing, HVAC, and electrical company. A garbage disposal sits at the crossroads of plumbing and electrical, which is precisely the kind of problem our cross-trained team is built to solve in one visit instead of two.

Our lead plumbing technician, Scott, brings 44 years of field experience to every call. He has cleared, resealed, rewired, and replaced more disposals than he can count, in everything from lakeside weekend homes to busy full-time Hill Country kitchens. That experience is why he can usually tell within minutes whether you are looking at a five-minute reset or a unit that local hard water has quietly destroyed from the inside.

What Goes Wrong With Disposals in the Highland Lakes

Disposals fail differently here than they do in the city, and the reasons trace straight back to local conditions:

Hard water and mineral buildup. The Highland Lakes sit on limestone, and the hard water around Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, and Granite Shoals leaves scale inside the disposal chamber and the drain line below it. That buildup is the single most common reason units start to hum, jam, drain slowly, and corrode early. When we see the same disposal jam again and again, hard water is usually behind it, and we will tell you whether a water softener would end the cycle.

Septic and aerobic systems. Many homes around Spicewood, Briarcliff, and the lake communities run on septic rather than city sewer. A disposal that is overloaded or used heavily can clog the line between the sink and the tank. We clear those clogs and help you adjust how the unit is used so the problem does not come back.

Weekend and lake homes. Plenty of Highland Lakes properties sit empty for weeks at a time. Disposals that go unused seize up from dried debris and mineral lock, then hum or trip the reset the next time someone flips the switch. We free these up and show you how to keep them moving between visits.

Common Problems We Repair

Our technicians diagnose and fix the full range of disposal failures: units that hum but will not grind, disposals that are completely dead, leaks from the sink flange or drain connections, slow or backed-up drains, persistent jams, unusual rattling or grinding noises, and resets that keep tripping. We carry common parts and replacement units on the truck, so most repairs are finished in a single visit, and if the unit is beyond saving we can replace it the same day.

What Your Disposal Is Telling You

Most disposal problems show up as one of a handful of symptoms. Here is what each one usually means, so you know what you are dealing with before we arrive:

Hums but will not turn. Power is reaching the motor, but the flywheel is jammed, usually by a stuck object or hard-water scale locking the grinding plate. Cut the power first, then the jam can be cleared and the unit reset. Repeated jamming points to an undersized unit or a failing motor.

Completely dead, no sound. No power is reaching the motor. The cause is a tripped reset button, a tripped breaker, a wiring or switch fault, or a burned-out motor. This is where being licensed in both plumbing and electrical lets us find the real cause fast.

Leaking. Where it leaks tells the story. The top (sink flange) and the sides (dishwasher or drain connections) are usually resealable. A leak from the bottom of the housing means the internal seals have failed and the unit needs to be replaced.

Slow drain or backup. The disposal itself may be fine; the problem is often grease and food fiber building up in the drain line below it, made worse by hard-water scale. We clear the line and check whether the disposal is contributing.

Loud rattling or metallic grinding. Usually a foreign object such as a utensil or bone fragment, but persistent grinding noise after the object is removed can mean worn or broken grinding components.

Reset button trips repeatedly. The unit is overloading. That is a sign of an undersized disposal for the household, a partial jam, or a motor on its way out.

Repair or Replace? How We Decide

We give you the honest math instead of defaulting to the most expensive option. As a rule, repair is the better value when the unit is under about 8 years old and the problem is a jam, a tripped reset, a loose or leaking connection at the top or sides, or a switch or wiring fault. These are quick, affordable fixes that get you years more life out of a disposal that is otherwise sound.

Replacement is usually the smarter call when the housing leaks from the bottom, the motor is burned out, the unit is corroded from years of hard water, or it has become chronically undersized for how your kitchen is used. In those cases repair costs creep toward replacement cost without solving the underlying problem. When you call us, you get both numbers up front and the recommendation that actually saves you money, not the one that pads the ticket. If replacement is the answer, see our garbage disposal installation page for how we size and install the new unit.
